The College of Wooster's Luke Ullman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) was named the American Baseball Coaches' Association/Rawlings 2005 Div. III National Player of the Year at the National Championship Banquet at the Appleton Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, Wis., on Thursday night, becoming the first Fighting Scot to earn the award in baseball, and just the third in any sport at the college. Joining him on the ABCA/Rawlings All-American First Team is senior third baseman Jake Frank (Wooster, Ohio / Northwestern), who earns his third national honor, while junior pitcher Jon Oliver (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota West) and freshman outfielder Pat Christensen (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore) both earn second-team recognition. Ullman becomes just the third student-athlete in the history of the school to earn national player-of-the-year honors, joining Bryan Nelson (basketball) in 2002-03, and Ian Banda (soccer) in 1990. Ullman, who ranks among the top-10 nationally in runs (1.43 per game) and slugging percentage this season and among the top-20 in Div. III history in runs scored (211) and doubles (61) for a career, is coming off a regional tournament MVP performance. The senior captain is 16-for-43 (.372) with 13 runs, six doubles, one triple, three homers, and 20 RBI over his last 10 games. |
